Hey Y’all! Welcome back! Today is all about making a worm tower! These are mini vermicomposting centers for inside your garden bed. They are very easy to make and can make a whole lot of a difference in the soil health of your garden! Worms are amazing creatures and you can learn more about them https://agirlwithagarden24.wixsite.com/gardencenter/post/why-are-worms-your-garden-friends but let's get started!

Materials Needed:

  1. Hardware cloth, I believe I used the ¼ inch holes but whatever you have is fine. Here is the link to the wire I bought! https://amzn.to/3VvBUkc

  2. Wire cutters

  3. Zip Ties

  4. Worm food

  5. Shredded paper

Getting Started

I recommend rolling the wire out and seeing how big you want to make them. You will roll the wires out and fold them to make a circle. They don’t have to be very big, you are just making an all-you-can-eat worm buffet. I think mine is 4 inches from side to side, but it is all personal preference.

Now that your wire is cut to your preferred length, it is time to zip-tie it into a circle to keep it together. I used 4 altogether, 1 on top, 1 ¼ way down on one side, and flipped it over to repeat it. But I also cut mine in half because I have a shorter bed, so I got 2 out of one.

Finally, now that they are zip-tied, you can dig a hole in the bed to add the worm towers into the garden bed.

Adding stuff to the worm towers

Now the worm towers are in the garden bed, I recommend you call the worms over with coffee grounds or wet cardboard. Then you add their favorite foods; Fruit and veggie scraps, grass clippings, oatmeal, cornmeal. Now that you have that layer, be sure not to add too much so it doesn’t start to rot, and smell bad. Don’t want flies in your garden bed. Add some shredded paper to the top to keep the worms out of the sun, and hold moisture, you can also use dry leaves. Be sure to keep inside the towers cool and damp, I would plant taller plants around them to keep them shaded in the hot summer. I put my towers next to my tomatoes and cucumbers.

Now you have a worm tower in your garden bed to attract more worms and keep them happy and healthy to make sure you have the best garden on the block. With you feeding them inside the garden bed you will make sure they never leave. They will repopulate within the garden bed to keep the population healthy and make your plants happy. You now get free worm castings.

Happy Gardening everyone! I hope you give these worm towers a try! If you do let me know! I would love to see your worm towers! Happy growing!
