I Found Slugs, Now What?

Updated: Mar 22

Hey Y'all! For one yuck, I despise slugs, they are not only gross they also like to eat all the leaves on the seedling I just planted! Use the 3 quick and easy ways to get rid of them! *If you have a wooden raised garden bed, you will most likely get them worse due to the wood rotting, which is normal!

Why you should be getting rid of the slugs, They can devour a garden. Not only can they eat your garden plants, but they can also cause birds to be more present in your garden. Birds like to eat the slugs, but they also might eat your ripe fruit and veggies! While they can be beneficial to your garden, they do help decompose organic matter in your soil. Which can help your garden out, in the long run, but they do like to damage your plants.

3 ways to get rid of them

1. Old Beer

Yes, I know what you're thinking. You don't know how it will work, but it's actually the yeast in the beer! Slugs are naturally attracted to the smell, which makes it the perfect trap.

To set the beer slug trap, use a bowl or dish, dig a hole to soil level in your garden, and put the bowl in the hole. Now that you have the bowl in the hole, fill it up with your favorite brew! I have used this type of trap and I have to say, I have had good results! *Note if it rains you will have to re-fill the traps!

2. Yeast Trap

This is for my peeps who don't want to waste their brew or don't have any. The reason why the beer works is the yeast so why not make a yeast trap? I have also used this method, and I have to say it worked just like the beer trap!

My recipe:

1 Teaspoon Yeast

2 Teaspoon Sugar

2 Teaspoon Flour

1 1/2 Cup of Warm Water

Directions:

Mix all together, I like to let the yeast get bubbly before taking it out to the garden to make sure you get all the yeast smell. So, you can get rid of the little nasties!* Also note that this trap is like the beer trap, and you will have to re-fill them every time it rains.

3. Instant Coffee

I know, it's crazy but the caffeine in the coffee kills the slugs. I used this, and it worked, very well. Be sure not to apply directly to your plants. It could harm them!

My recipe:

3 Tablespoons Instant Coffee

1 Gallon of Warm water

Directions:

Mix it all together, and apply it to the ground, not on the plants! Now your slugs should be dead.

Happy Gardening! I hope these tips and tricks help you get rid of the nasty slugs! I recommend using the Instant coffee trick before you plant all your seedlings, and after using one of the traps! Let me know what you think! Have you given any of these a try?
